Manager, Project Financial Governance

About The Role

The Manager, Project Financial Governance, is responsible for the strategic development of Data & Enterprise Technology (DET) Portfolio financial reporting processes and methodologies, and the maintenance of accurate and insightful financial information to key decision makers in DET’s Leadership Team. The role will also develop and manage the commercial processes required to effectively execute and track multiple commercial engagements in support of the project portfolio whilst ensuring compliance with Suncorp commercial controls.

As a key enabler for the success of DET the Financial Controller will provide a single point of contact for finance related queries and will ensure financial rigour is applied to forecasts, accruals and financial reporting of projects.

The role is a leading role within DET, which will provide SME expertise and advice when needed in the financial management of a complex portfolio of projects totalling around 50M-70M in budget and 80-100 projects per annum.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working with the DET EGM and the EM DET Delivery Transformation, lead financial models development to support delivery methodology options for DET strategic direction
  • Lead development, implementation and change management of new project portfolio financial processes, documentation and controls in alignment with DET strategic direction
  • Maintenance of existing processes, formats and delivery of the monthly financial reporting pack for total DET delivery roadmap (~$50M-70M), with program breakdowns, statistical analysis, resource demand graphs and financial commentary
  • Overview and control of DET’s master project file including project metadata, monthly consolidation of 50+ financial cost workbooks and Change Log
  • Monthly liaison with Executive Manager and Portfolio Managers to communicate and review project financial performance highlighting possible financial risks
  • Provide financial and commercial governance and direction over delivery activities and overall support to Program and Project Managers from project start to closure
  • Ensure ongoing support costs resulting from project delivery are accurately captured and costed to the project or to BAU opex as appropriate
  • Ensure cost anomalies are identified both in PPM and the general ledger, submitting journals, accruals and chargeback corrections as required
  • Advocate better financial understanding and accuracy from project managers through regular support, communications and training
  • Work closely with PMO and DET Portfolio Leadership to ensure our financial processes are in alignment with and contribute to DET and Technology objectives
  • Build strong relationships and collaboration between internal stakeholders and technology teams within DET
  • Provide advice and financial thought leadership to ensure successful pipeline planning and financial forecasting strategies align with domain and corporate goals.
  • Develop and implement data quality measures to ensure maintenance of strong financial data quality in our enterprise portfolio management tool - PPM
  • Working in an integrated manner with PMO, develop and implement processes for maintenance and upkeep of financial data in PPM for overall financial management purposes
  • Develop process and models for yearly financial forecasting cycles
  • Develop and implement processes to allow effective execution and tracking of commercial agreements with multiple partners and agencies in alignment and compliance with Suncorp commercial policies
  • Working with Executive and Portfolio Managers, support development of Statements of Work and new contracts in alignment and compliance with Suncorp commercial policies.
  • Develop and implement monthly commercials status reporting for consumption of the DET Leadership Team.


About You
  • At least 10 years appropriate industry experience
  • Management Accounting or Financial Control experience in a large scale delivery organisation with a demonstrated experience managing datasets for financial management purposes
  • Knowledge/experience in all aspects of portfolio delivery lifecycle in a corporate environment
  • Previous experience with MS PPM an advantage
  • Demonstrable experience in managing commercial processes in a corporate environment

Technical Competencies
  • Ability to manage, understand and draw insights from a large and dynamic data set
  • Strong eye for detail
  • Ability to manage large resource data sets for an $50M-70M portfolio of work and convert into meaningful financial insights and reports for management purposes
  • With a clear understanding of how projects and BAU activities function, ability to create data quality controls to identify and correct financial data anomalies
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation and influencing skills
  • Ability to form strong working relationships with varying levels of management
  • Good understanding of commercial and contractual development and execution processes
  • Ability to influence and effect positive financial and commercial outcomes with DET Portfolio Managers
  • Strong stakeholder management, planning, organisation, decision making and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritise, multi-task and effectively delegate
  • Working knowledge of SDLC and general project management methodologies such as Prince 2 or PMbok
  • Ability to collate financial data, trends and insights into effective executive reporting
