Ahp3 Strong Start Supervisor New - Department Of Human Services

I WORK FOR SA - Elizabeth Grove, SA

Voluntary, Charity & Social Work
Source: uWorkin

The SA Government has committed to reforming the child protection system in South Australia. The Department for Human Services has lead responsibility for implementing the Child and Family Support System reform, in which Safer Family Services plays a key part.

Safer Family Services (SFS) provides help and support to children and their families at risk of harm, neglect and family violence, by deliberately and strongly intervening to disrupt the patterns of intergenerational trauma, and increase the number of children able to be cared for safely in their homes, connected to culture and community. This is particularly relevant for children and families with multiple and complex needs.

Strong Start provides advice, information and support to first-time mothers who are experiencing challenges in their lives that can impact on their child’s development. Field workers will visit first-time pregnant mums in their home and support new families to address problems like stable housing, mental health, drug or alcohol issues and will assist first-time mums to attend their appointments during pregnancy.

The program aims to work with families to increase their ability to ‘be available’ for their infant by:

  • Supporting parents to manage their own health issues.
  • Providing developmental opportunities for the infant, including access to child care.
  • Developing the relationship between the parent and their infant.
  • Increasing the support network for the family in their local community.

The Supervisor, Strong Start liaises with and collaborates with senior managers, staff and external stakeholders and develops strong links with key partners to ensure comprehensive and quality program outcomes for vulnerable parents, and provides leadership, training, support and mentoring to staff as required. The Supervisor will build strong networks with key service providers and will consult with relevant staff across Department of Human Services , SA Health, Department of Child Protection (DCP), and Child and Family Health Service (CaFHS). The Supervisor is responsible for the provision of operational, professional and clinical leadership to staff to ensure the delivery of family support services for families where significant indicators of family and infant vulnerability have been identified, and provide specialised advice to the senior management on operational, professional issues and systemic processes. The Supervisor will ensure that services provided to families are culturally appropriate and safe and will employ strategies to empower families and build on strengths and resilience.
