Richmond Search has been exclusively instructed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) to find an experienced transactional lawyer to join the Office of the General Counsel as a Senior Legal Adviser.

The team

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) was formed just 18 months ago and is responsible for providing in-house legal advice across the Department of Justice and Community Safety and to the Attorney-General, as First Law Officer. 

The Transactions team within the OGC leads the delivery of legal services on commercial transactions and projects for DJCS. The Department’s remit is extremely broad offering the opportunity to advise on complex legal matters spanning commercial, infrastructure, IT, construction and project related transactions. Senior Legal Advisers will also have opportunities to work across the broader OGC team including matters outside the Transactions team.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Providing solutions-based legal and policy advice on issues relevant to the government, ministers and the department, both individually and as part of a team of solicitors
  • Managing the preparation of legal documentation and the drafting of complex reports, briefs and Ministerial and other correspondence as required
  • Supporting and working collaboratively with the executive and leadership team
  • Developing strong relationships with other DJCS groups as well as other departments, agencies, external law firms and stakeholders.

Your role

Among other things, you will be involved in matters such as:

  • Drafting and implementing contracts for the supply of goods and services
  • Construction projects to establish correctional facilities
  • Advising on large ICT projects
  • Advising on and preparing procurement documentation
  • Advising on legal and strategic issues in relation to service providers.

What we are looking for

You will need to be legally qualified in Australia with 4 - 6 years’ PQE. Experience from a reputable private practice firm or in-house environment from a non-contentious practice area will be essential. Practice areas such as Commercial, IT and Construction/Projects would be of particular interest however we are also keen to see lawyers from other non-contentious practice areas such as Corporate, Finance and Real Estate. Crucially, we are looking for lawyers who can demonstrate at interview a combination of attributes including:

  • Strong written, verbal and commercial drafting skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Initiative and accountability
  • The ability to provide and adapt legal solutions in a dynamic policy environment
  • The ability to successfully negotiate and influence diverse stakeholders on a range of complex issues
  • Strategic thinking and strong problem solving skills
  • Outstanding relationship-building skills
  • Empathy and cultural awareness.
