About the team

The property team supports the department's goals, providing its staff with a safe, and productive work environment. It also contributes to the department's resilience to emergencies and interruptions to business.

The team is responsible for maintenance and leases for more than 60 properties and numerous minor construction projects. The team is leading significant improvements to the department emergency management processes and its frameworks for business continuity.

What you will do

The Department of Industry, Energy, Science and Resources (DISER) is seeking a talented and experienced business continuity professional to perform the role of EL1 Assistant Manager - Business Continuity & Emergency Management within DISER's head office located in Industry House in Canberra.

The Assistant Manager, Business Continuity & Emergency Management will have the opportunity to shape DISER's crisis response frameworks working as an integral part of the Property and Protective Security team. Reporting to the Manager Security and Business Continuity, the Assistant Manager, will lead a team Business Continuity & Emergency Management Officers in ongoing development and maintenance of the Department's Business Continuity Management and Emergency Management Frameworks, engaging across all areas of the department.

Key duties include:

  • Leading and coordinating crisis response actions.
  • Leading the preparation and management of strategic frameworks, including strategic plans, policies, systems, technologies and procedures, and their associated budgets.
  • Leverage best practice processes and methodologies to enhance the maturity of DISER's Business Continuity frameworks.
  • Working with divisions to identify, assess and document critical processes, as well as improving and reviewing business recovery plans, (delivery of business continuity training and one-on-one assistance).
  • Developing briefs, assurance reports and analysis for the departmental Executive.
  • Playing a central role in in the department's business continuity responses across the department's National portfolio.
  • Coordination of the Business Continuity and Emergency Management exercise program including the development of scenario based test plans.
  • Undertaking lessons learnt exercises and engaging in continuous improvement to build departmental resilience.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


Desirable attributes are:
  • Experience in managing stakeholder relationships, including senior executives.
  • Experience and/or qualifications in Business Continuity Management and Emergency Management with a focus on staff safety.
  • Management skills for dealing with complex issues during a business interruption or an emergency event.
This process is being used to fill an ongoing opportunity at the Executive Level 1. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing Executive Level 1 vacancies.
