About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain experience working as a Senior Police Lawyer within the Specialist Children's Court Prosecutions Unit at Victoria Police. Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with a team of enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Police Lawyers to prosecute a range of complex criminal and family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions as well as prosecution of therapeutic court matters. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively. This role offers an opportunity to tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity. Victoria Police is a contemporary and agile workplace and support flexible working arrangements.

Your duties will include:

  • Appearing as an advocate, caseload management and providing legal advice/information to a range of clients in the Children's Court of Victoria and other areas as directed on behalf of Victoria Police.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships within Victoria Police.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
  • Liaising with legal representatives and court staff.
  • Providing support and assistance to operational police members, Supervising Lawyers and police prosecutors in the management of more complex cases in the Children's Court. You will also be required to supervise and provide professional guidance to direct reports as directed by your senior managers.


As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer, with an Unrestricted Practising Certificate.
  • Possession of a current Victorian drivers' licence is highly desirable.
  • The ability to work in a team and in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • A high level of resilience and emotional intelligence.


Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) full time, ongoing position is currently available.
  • Position is located at the Melbourne Children's Court Unit, 456 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
