Family Day Care Australia (FDCA), the national peak body for family day care, is seeking to employ a Government Relations Manger. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance in, and execution of FDCA’s advocacy efforts to inform and influence policy outcomes that directly support viability, growth, and quality in family day care.


About FDCA

Through collaborative national advocacy, a strong research evidence base and high public visibility, FDCA supports, represents and promotes the family day care sector in delivering quality outcomes for children. FDCA is an apolitical, not for profit, national member association representing family day care educator and service members. Together with sector stakeholders, we are working towards a stronger future for family day care. 


About the role

The Government Relations Manager is a new role that will join a small but highly effective Advocacy and Engagement Team at FDCA. The role is offered as a 12 month, part-time role initially, with scope for permanency depending on successful program outcomes.


The Government Relations Manager will play a crucial role in sector advocacy and lobbying efforts to influence positive policy outcomes for family day care. The role will involve strategy formulation and execution including engagement with Ministers, Members of Parliament, Departmental officials, key stakeholders and the media, in addition to leveraging the significant reach and influence of 13,000 members and 70,000 families engaged in family day care nationally. 


FDCA’s national office located in Kincumber, on the NSW Central Coast, however work from home arrangements will be considered for applicants in Canberra or Greater Sydney.


Key duties include:

  • Formulation and implementation of multi layered advocacy strategies to influence positive policy outcomes for family day care
  • Understand and analyse the political environment to map electorate based opportunities to raise awareness and garner political support for FDCA’s advocacy objectives 
  • Leverage and provide guidance to the national membership, stakeholder networks and the media to activate coordinated grassroots campaigns
  • Engagement with Ministers, Members of Parliament, Departmental officials, stakeholders and in advocating for policy reform.

About you:

  • To succeed in this role, you have the following skills and experience:
  • Understanding of and experience in the machinery of government and in public policy formulation
  • Tertiary and/or post graduate qualifications in a related discipline
  • Government advocacy experience in a complex political/policy environment
  • Ability to quickly acquire an understanding of the policy and regulatory environment governing the early childhood education and care sector in Australia
  • Proven ability to write clear, comprehensive, compelling submissions, strategy and briefing papers, reports, and presentations.
  • Proven experience in stakeholder engagement, with an ability to engage with senior policy decision makers.
