JOB DESCRIPTION

The Role

We have two unique leadership opportunities available in:

  • Data and Artificial Intelligence
  • Cloud-Native Computing and Applications


To be successful in these roles, you will require a research background in one, or more, of the following disciplines: information systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, command and control, data science, cloud-native computing.


You will provide scientific leadership to staff and contractors within the Command and Control Information Systems (C2IS) Group within Joint Warfare and Operations (JWO) branch.

You will develop staff, capabilities and research programs in support of the Defence Strategy, Defence S&T Strategy (More, together) and the Defence Innovation Strategy (Concepts to Capabilities).


Working in partnership with wide variety of clients from Joint Capabilities Group, Joint Operations Command, Chief Information Officer Group and the Defence AI Centre, you will forecast future Defence problems, initiate research and generate new knowledge to produce enhanced Defence capability. You will provide support in development and leadership of research packages and will maintain appropriate linkages to industry, universities and overseas organisations.


Discipline Leader Data and AI Architecture

The Data and AI Architecture discipline undertakes research into contemporary systems and processes required to manage data and deliver Artificial Intelligence (AI) at scale and pace into Defence.


The role will require thought leadership in the approaches and methodologies into how Artificial Intelligence can be realised appropriately and responsibly within Defence. This will involve an understanding of the technical backbone that will allow for sustainable and repeatable delivery of AI solutions, data governance and associated policies.


The discipline comprises primarily of data scientists complemented by a contracted team of software engineers.


This position requires a NV2 security clearance.


Discipline Leader Cloud-Native Application Architecture

The Cloud-Native Application Architecture discipline undertakes research into cloud-native technologies in support of infrastructure automation, collaborative development of applications and accelerated delivery through DevSecOps processes.


The role will require thought leadership in the approaches and methodologies in development of an open government-owned integrating architecture which will support disaggregated software teams co-developing integrated applications. The role will also support the implementation of DevSecOps processes within Defence.


The discipline comprises primarily of computer scientists complemented by a contracted team of software engineers.


This position requires an NV1 security clearance

Joint Warfare and Operations is an analysis branch within Joint & Operations Analysis Division. We have a proud history of supporting ADF operations and leading Defence thinking around command and control (C2) at the operational level. Our mission is to apply relevant research to address the operational challenges presented by Australia’s strategic circumstances. In particular, we enhance warfighting effectiveness through the development of leading-edge C2 systems, decision-making technologies, and concepts and capabilities that support agile warfighting.

The ideal candidate will have experience working closely with senior clients to elicit requirements and influence strategic thinking. You will have a track record of client delivery incorporating innovation and agile development and with a focus on solutions which enable sustainable delivery of capability at scale and pace.
