About the branch

The Royal Commissions & Inquiries (RCI) Branch provides specialist legal services and advice to the State in relation to Royal Commissions and Inquiries. The legal services undertaken by the branch include:

  • Establishment of Royal Commissions (exclusive service)
  • Management of notices to produce including document review
  • Providing advice on the laws applying to Royal Commissions, public law matters and other issues as they arise
  • Witness preparation
  • Hearing preparation
  • Briefing and instructing counsel
  • State submissions
  • Strategic responses
  • Project management and reporting
  • Royal Commissions and inquiries general advisory

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and dedicated Senior Legal Assistant to join our RCI Branch and contribute to matters of high profile public interest. This role will provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to a team of solicitors. Day to day responsibilities would include:

  • Preparing correspondence and relevant documents – drafting and typing (dictaphone)
  • Liaising with clients, witnesses and barristers
  • Amending & formatting documents
  • File management – maintaining orderly, up to date legal files in electronic and hard copy format
  • Diary and email management – monitoring emails, calendars and recording deadlines
  • Telephone assistance – both incoming and screening
  • Coordinating monthly billing, including client specific requirements
  • Assisting with monthly reporting
  • General administration – photocopying, couriers and relieving reception
  • Mentoring other Legal Assistants
  • Assisting the Branch Team Leader as required

Skills and experience

  • Significant experience providing legal support and mentoring team members
  • Confident in providing high quality and responsiveness legal administrative assistance to more than one solicitor
  • Strong understanding of court systems and procedures, including knowledge of legal terminology and an ability to conduct research using online databases and systems
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and has the ability to operate autonomously
  • Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to service excellence
